This appendix provides an introduction to logarithms (real and complex) and decibels, a quantitative measure of sound intensity.Several specific dB scales are defined, and dynamic range considerations in audio are considered. Decibels (dB) are a way to measure how loud or quiet a sound is on the decibel scale. Users are encouraged to open the Concept Builder and explore. The reference level is typically the threshold of human hearing, the quietest sound the average human ear can detect. ![]() Reference Level: A reference level is needed to use decibels for sound measurement. Use of this Concept Builder with our Task Tracker system allows teachers to track student progress. In the case of sound, decibels quantify how much louder or quieter a sound is compared to a reference sound. The learner must use this information and an understanding of deciBels in order to determine the deciBel level of Sound Source B. There are 36 total questions organized into 12 different Question Groups and spread across three difficulty levels. Learners are told the deciBel level of Sound Source A and are told that Sound Source B is 10 n times more or less intense.
